Why Kundalini Yoga & Meditation?
What is it?
Kundalini Yoga is known as the Yoga of Awareness and is designed with the “householder” in mind; that is, the person who holds down a full-time job or leads a very active life and wants to experience immediate benefits from practicing yoga. With Kundalini Yoga & Meditation you are not required to be in perfect physical shape or flexible – it works for you if you can breathe and move your body!
Where did it come from?
Kundalini Yoga & Meditation was brought to North America in 1969 by Yogi Bhajan, whose philosophy of “Keep up, and you’ll be kept up.” and “Doing is believing.” have become the mottos of this particularly effective and transformational yoga.
What does it do?
Kundalini Yoga raises the flow of energy – the kundalini – which is the creative potential in each of us; it gives us an experience of elevation and well-being and with regular practice – even just a few minutes a day – can lead to positive changes of every level of your life – body, mind, and soul. Using simple but highly effective techniques and exercises done alone or in combination, Kundalini Yoga quickly and effectively cleans the blood and body of toxins; builds strength and endurance; clears the mind of unwanted and unhealthy thought patterns and creates new opportunities for growth!
What does a class look like?
The general format of a traditional Kundalini Yoga & Meditation class is described below.
We begin each class by tuning-in with a sacred sound vibration known as the Adi Mantra: Ong Namo Guru Dev Namo. We repeat it three times to connect to the Universal Wisdom, the Voice of the Inner Teacher, our Best Self that exists in each one of us. Following that are warm-ups used to prepare participants for the designated kriya, or sequence of exercises for that class. Pranayam, or breathwork is practiced as part of the warm-up as well as throughout the kriya.
Each class features a theme that addresses a variety of levels of wellness. These kriyas consist primarily of targeted rhythmic movements as well as more static stretching postures. Typically each exercise in the kriya is for a prescribed amount of time or repetitions and concluded with a brief relaxation.
Following the kriya, there is a longer period of deep relaxation and meditation, though the order varies. To close the class we sing the “Long Time Sun” song and end with the most common mantra (sound vibration) in Kundalini Yoga: Sat Nam (rhymes with But Mom). It means “Truth is My Identity” or “Truth-Identity” – we chant one or more times at the end of the class to reaffirm that truth.
